LACE FLOWER FACE CLOTHMaterials: 2 oz or 50 g cotton or linen yarn DIRECTIONS CO 40 sts. Knit 8 rows of garter stitch (all knit sts). You should have 4 garter stitch row ridges before starting the lace pattern (each ridge represents two rows of knitting). You will now be working a garter stitch border of 4 sts on each end which will "frame" the lace pattern. The lace pattern is called Quatrefoil Eyelet and is from A Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G. Walker. Remember, you are going to be knitting 4 sts at the beginning and end
of every row. These sts are not included in the directions for the lace
pattern below. You may want to use a stitch marker to help you remember to knit
these sts on every row. Quatrefoil Eyelet (multiple of 8 sts.)Row 1 - (Wrong side) and all other wrong-side or odd numbered rows - Purl. Repeat Rows 1-16. Repeat this lace pattern until you have 6 rows of eyelet flowers. This means you will be knitting the Row 1-16 series three times in all. Remember - all wrong side rows or odd numbered rows are purl. To finish the border P one row across. Then knit 8 rows. You should have 4
garter stitch row ridges. BO and work in the tail with a tapestry needle. NOTES When knitting lace it is a good idea to finish a row before setting your work down. Knitters have been known to mark each pattern repeat with a stitch holder. This pattern is only a multiple of 8 sts. Some lace patterns are 30-40+ sts and are quite elaborate. It's a good idea to check your pattern and stitches after every row, especially when you are new to lace knitting. It is much better to fix a mistake right away and avoid having to rip back a substantial amount of knitting. If you do have to rip back, it is easiest to rip back to row 2 or 10, which are all knit rows. It is much more difficult to rip back to a row with yarn overs. Many knitters use a Post-it note to keep track of where they are in a pattern. Other knitters have been known to put each row of their pattern on a 3x5 card. They hole punch the corner of the cards and put it on a key ring. As they finish a row they flip the card to keep their place. There are also special knitting clipboards sold to pattern knitters. These clipboards use various clever devices to keep track of the knitted row. My shawl was made using the same lace pattern. I took the shawl pattern from the book Knitter's Stash edited by Barbara Albright. The pattern is on page 23 and is called Meadow Flowers Shawl. I used three 25 g skeins of Madil's Kid Seta. Each skein cost about $10.00. The yarn is 70% super kid mohair and 30% silk. Other comparable yarns are Kid Silk Haze by Rowan or Douceur et Soie by Knit One, Crochet Two. The linen washcloth was made using Euroflax yarn by Louet. A single skein costs about $15.00 and will make two face cloths. There are eight patterns for linen washcloths on page 75 of the same book, Knitter's Stash. There are numerous lace knitting web sites and suppliers on the web. Your best place to start is to use your favorite search engine to location the lace knitting ring. Here are three commercial sites that I like. http://www.Whiteliesdesigns.com TERMS USED CO-cast on K- knit |
